Mahant death case: ABAP may set up rtd judges’ panel

PRAYAG RAJ: Even as the death of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP) chief Mahant Narendra Giri is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and ABAP’s confidentially appointed internal committee of seers, parishad’s general secretary Swami Hari Giri on Wednesday said “if needed, the Akhada Parishad will even appoint a separate probe panel comprising five retired judges of the high court to get to the bottom of the matter”.
Claiming the issue to be directly related to the safety and security of all senior seers in general, Hari Giri, who is the chief patron of Juna Akhara, reiterated his belief of a foul play in Mahant Narendra Giri’s death.
“Whatever be the outcome of the CBI inquiry, I am not ready to accept that Maharaj Ji (Narendra Giri), who had been my close associate for over 30 years, can commit suicide,” said Giri while talking to TOI.
Foul play can’t be ruled out, says Juna Akhara patron
He was ‘babbar sher’ and so was his character which can be seen through decisions he took. How can one digest that man of his calibre can take such an extreme step? Because of this, we sense that there is more to the story for which a deep probe is necessary,” said Giri while talking to TOI. He further said, “In the past four seers have died under mysterious circumstances and barring Narendra Giri, there is no probe whatsoever, no one is interested in finding out what happened.” Showing concern about the life of senior seers of the country including himself, Giri further said, “My ashram is surrounded by people living a nomadic life, one day someone would murder me and the incident would be projected as a ‘suicide’. And people would say, ‘Ab to pratha chal padi hai, ek sant gaya, ab inhone bhi atmahatya ker li’ (now it is practice, one seer is gone and now this one has committed suicide),” said the senior seer.
On the issue of Balbeer Giri of Niranjani Akhara being made the successor of Narendra Giri, Hari Giri termed it as an “internal matter of an Akhara. “It is our practice that one Akhara does not interfere in the decisions of another Akhara. Even though his (Narendra Giri’s) disciple is being made the head of Baghambari Math, it is the moral responsibility of everyone in Niranjani Akhara to find out the truth behind the death of their secretary, who was also the head of ABAP as it is not the ‘murder’ of any ordinary sadhu,” said Hari Giri.
