LinkedIn is shutting down ‘Stories’ feature within one year of launch

NEW DELHI: LinkedIn introduced a feature called ‘Stories’, popularised by Snapchat and then adopted by Instagram as Stories. Within a year of the launch of LinkedIn Stories, the company feels that Stories has no future and has announced that it is shutting down Stories starting this month.
Introduced in February last year, the professional social network decided to do away with the feature after user feedback. LinkedIn found out that users on the platform didn’t want disappearing videos. “In developing Stories, we assumed people wouldn’t want informal videos attached to their profile, and that ephemerality would reduce barriers that people feel about posting. Turns out, you want to create lasting videos that tell your professional story in a more personal way and that showcase both your personality and expertise,” said Liz Li, senior director of product, LinkedIn.
LinkedIn also thanked the users who used the Stories feature and shared their bite-sized video content.
This is not the first time that a social media platform has removed its Stories feature. In July this year, Twitter also killed its Stories-like feature ‘Fleets’. Same as LinkedIn, Twitter also noticed that users didn’t respond to ephemeral video in the way it had wanted. “We hoped Fleets would help more people feel comfortable joining the conversation on Twitter. But, in the time since we introduced Fleets to everyone, we haven’t seen an increase in the number of new people joining the conversation with Fleets like we hoped,” said Twitter in a blog post.
Meanwhile, an online report suggests that LinkedIn is working on a Clubhouse rival. As reported by TechCrunch, LinkedIn is developing an audio networking feature of its own.
In a statement to TechCrunch, LinkedIn said, “We’re doing some early tests to create a unique audio experience connected to your professional identity. And, we’re looking at how we can bring audio to other parts of LinkedIn such as events and groups, to give our members even more ways to connect to their community.”
