‘BJP is waking up to farmers, deprived before UP polls’

LUCKNOW: Accusing BJP of suddenly waking up to farmers and other castes ahead of the 2022 UP assembly elections, BSP chief Mayawati said on Monday that the newly inducted ministers should have refused to accept the appointment as the cabinet expansion was clearly aimed at just caste appeasement before the elections.
Saying that they were inducted into the cabinet on the basis of their castes, barely six months before the elections, so that BJP could take advantage of the caste equations, Mayawati added: “These people should not have accepted their appointments. By the time they are able to understand their ministries and try to do something, the elections would have been notified and they will have no power to sanction any work,” she said.
She also said that BJP had done nothing for the uplift and development of these castes, Brahmins, SC/ STs and OBC in the past four and a half years and had, in fact, stopped most of the works which had been started by her government for them.
“I would only advice people from these communities to beware of such two-faced governments,” said the BSP chief.
Similarly, Mayawati said, the government was trying to give miniscule sops to farmers now that elections were approaching but farmers had seen through the plans and would not fall for BJP’s false promises again.
“In the past four and a half years, farmers have been ignored completely and the minimum support price for sugarcane was not increased. I had raised this issue during the Prabuddh Varg Sammelan which I addressed on September 7. Now, just ahead of the elections, BJP has suddenly remembered sugarcane farmers and this is a reflection of their selfishness,” Mayawati said.
She added that farmers across the country are very upset with the anti-farmer policies of BJP’s central and state governments but they also know that increasing MSP marginally just before the elections was not a solution to their problems.
